Math: We will use a new program this year called i-Ready Classroom.
Multiplication is the basis for many other math concepts. Please work with your child to know their multiplication facts fluently. 10-15 minutes a day dedicated to multiplication facts is all you need. For example, students should be able to tell you what 7x8 or 6x7 is without counting or looking at a multiplication chart. When students know their basic math facts fluently, it makes understanding the math concepts we’ll learn in 5th grade so much easier and much more enjoyable. It really does make all the difference!
We will practice math facts using XtraMath https://xtramath.org/ . Students will have login information inside the cover of their orange HW folder.
Proficiency Based Learning in Math: Student proficiency scores are intended to reflect academic proficiency. They are intended to include what a student knows and is able to do, therefore, recorded grades can change as students make progress toward mastery. Homework and practice assignments are used to guide students toward proficiency or mastery and will not directly affect their report card proficiency level.
The general proficiency scale is:
4 – Highly Proficient (higher level thinking)
3 – Proficient - Got It! (this is the goal that shows proficiency at grade level)
2 – Approaching Proficient (almost there)
1 – Below Proficient - Keep Trying (need extra help)
Determining Student’s Proficiency Level: A combination of paper/pencil and online quizzes/tests will be given to students to determine their proficiency level. I try to keep quizzes and tests short, but include all levels of proficiency (levels 1-4) within the assessment to adequately determine each student’s proficiency level. Students will have the opportunity to retake any assessment that affects their proficiency score that will be reported on their report card. Students will need to complete a practice by a given deadline prior to being able to retake.
Math Practice (Homework): Homework and practice assignments are used to guide students to proficiency or mastery and will be assigned (almost) daily. Students will always have time to begin (and most finish) HW in class. If they don’t finish their HW in class, they can take it home to finish it. HW should not take more than 20 minutes at home. Students will correct their own assignment the next day to check for understanding. Students may also take HW completed in class home to show parent/guardians before correcting the next morning. There are resources available on my Google Classroom if you need any extra help.

- Go to gmail and add another account.
- Their email is the first 4 letters of their first name, first 4 letters of their last name, and first 4 numbers of their 9#. For example Christine Mitchell 987564 would be [email protected]
- Their password is 9# (uppercase initials); so mine would be 987564CM
